    How to conquer the Bucket Brigade obstacle.

    The Bucket Brigade obstacle is one of the most hated, that's for sure!

    An exhausting obstacle that tests your muscular endurance and your hand grip. A pair of gloves could help.


    Before dive in, let me answer at some of the most common question:

    1. What is the Spartan Race bucket brigade distance? Usually it vary from 200 to 300 yards
    2. How much does a 5 gallon bucket of stone weight? About 70-100 lbs

    What you must do is:

    Grab a 5-gallon bucket, fill it with with rocks and trek the prescribed route, about 200-300 yards with a few up and down hills.

    A grueling taskfor sure.

    Don’t come back with all the gravel in your bucket? No burpees for you. Run the obstacle again.

    How to confront this task?

    You can't carry the bucket on your shoulder. If you lose rocks along the way, you'll have to repeat it, no burpee solution. Expect a steep hill and/or a long trek on this one.

    It's not so simple, and without the proper technique, the difficulty increases. The best way to train for this obstacle is doing it.

    Go buy a 5-gallon bucket, fill it with stone, gravel, sand, whatever. Find a hill and walk. Doing so you can find your limits. Start with filling half of the bucket and go on.

    A pro tip:

    If you wear shorts or other pants with a tight drawstring, perch the bucket on the front part of your pants, this can help a little to relieve the effort on your arms.

    Never stop! Keep walking!

    Stopping to rest and start again is only a waste of energy and you don't want it!

    Pay attention to the fill line of the bucket or you'll have to repeat the obstacle!! You don't want it either!

    Racer Instructions:

    • Fill the bucket with gravel from the “bin” to a point above the line of holes in the bucket.
    • Carry the bucket along the prescribed route.
    • Return filled so that all holes are covered with gravel.
    • Empty bucket back into the bin upon completion of the bucket obstacle route.

    Failure Modes:

    • Failure to return the line with a full bucket.
    • Carrying bucket on shoulders, neck or head.
    • Failure to empty the bucket into the bin.
