    How to overcome the Spartan Spear Throw Obstacle.

    The Spartan Spear Throw obstacle is the symbol of the Spartan Races, it makes you feel like the 300 Spartans, ready to fight.

    It is completely different from the other obstacles, you don't need strength nor agility.

    How to throw a spear?


     You need pure technique.

    The only way to avoid 30 burpees is to hit the target and have the spear stick. Oh, and there is a rope attached to the spear so before you throw it, make sure to not stand on the rope.

    Follow these instructions and you may have a possibility to conquer this infamous obstacle.

    First step:

    put the spear on your open palm in perfect balance, so that it doesn' fall from your hand, and now it moves back about a fist. If you open the palm now the spear will tend to fall forward.​

    Second step:

    the grip on the spear, absolutely don't grip with the fingertips. My preferred grip is with my thumb riding straight along the bottom and my first 3 fingers clamping down tightly from above.​

    Third step:

    the aim, hold the spear up near your ear. While you are charging, never allow your aim to veer off target. You may also hold out your opposite arm parallel with your spear to aid in aiming during your approach.

    Fourth step:

    the trajectory should be a slight arc, with the intention of peaking near the half-way point and beginning a downward trajectory into the target.

    Racer Instructions:

    • One attempt to throw the spear and have it stick into the spearman (wood or hay).
    • The spear can not be touching the ground.

    Failure Modes:

    • Spear does not stick into the spearman or it is touching the ground.

    Failure Penalty:

    • 30 Burpees
